What are
Email Aliases ?
What are Autoforwards ?
What are Mailing Lists ?
What are Auto-responders ?
Do my email accounts come with redirection
and alias capabilities?
What does 'relay not allowed' mean?
Aliases are different names
for the same mailbox. Mail can be redirected from a generic department name to a real person. For example,
you can redirect sales@yourcompany.com to your sales manager's mailbox, or
marketing@yourcompany.com to your marketing manager.
Alternatively, if you run a one-person
business, but you would want your website to make you look
as if your company is much larger, with several departments.
You can use e-mail addresses like sales@yourbusiness.com,
info@yourbusiness.com, and tech@yourbusiness.com which will
all point to your default mailbox.
In this way, it makes your
company look as if there are several people behind it,
running different areas, when in actuality each alias simply
points to your original mailbox.
Autoforwards are emails
which are automatically directed to another email account as
soon as it receives an incoming mail
Mailing lists are a powerful feature. They allow you to send mail to many
correspondents with a single command. They may be used internally (for example, to
send mail to the whole sales department) or externally (for example, to send mail to allregistered users of one of your products).
Mailing lists have many uses and configurations. You can set up a list with only the
members that you choose on it, or you can set up a list anyone can join by sending a
subscription request to your mail server. You can set the list up so that it functions as a
discussion group in which any member can send mail to all the other members, or you
can set it up more like a broadcast medium so that only you can send messages.
Auto-responders respond automatically to mail received at certain addresses. For
example, you can set an auto-responder to automatically deliver a file containing information on
your company's products when a customer sends a request to
products@yourcompany.com. You can configure auto-responders to deliver
immediate information to customers in a timely manner.
Yes. Each mail account can
be redirected to multiple email addresses and can also have
multiple aliases.
Our mailserver is secured
so that only our customers can send mail through it.
This is necessary both to save the resources for our
customers and because unsecured email servers now get abused
by spammers which can result in ther mail servers refusing
to carry their traffic. For those interested in this
area see <http://mail-abuse.org/>
and <http://www.orbs.org/>
If you have a static IP
address (ie always the same IP address when you connect to
the internet) then we can register that address with our
mailserver. However, most of our customers have
dynamic IP addresses so we validate known users by checking
that you have logged in to collect mail before allowing you
to send mail. You will see this message if you are
trying to send email before checking your email. Some
email clients allow you to select read before send - Outlook
does not - so you need to have read your email in the 20
minutes before you try to send mail.
